Maxell 8" Floppy Disk

physical object

2010.1.23

Description

Maxell 8" Floppy Disk circa 1987. The 8" floppy disk was invented in 1967 by Alan Shugart at IBM. By 1972 the 8" floppy disk was capable of holding 175KB of data as they were replaced by their cheaper and smaller competitor the 5.25" floppy disk. Due to its under use the 8" floppy was only single side and very rarely over double density leaving it at such a low capacity.
